The 2017 growing season started off slowly, with cool weather and lots of rain. Budburst didn’t take place till early- to mid-May, with flowering taking place in mid-June. This was quickly followed, however, by warmer temperatures. The summer was very warm and dry and there were 82 days without any rain. Smoke from forest fires stayed out of the valley bottom and actually benefited the ripening by providing protection from the intense summer heat. By veraison, the smoke had cleared, but ripening had been slow, resulting in an additional 3 weeks of hang time and later picking dates than in the previous two harvests. Growing degree days were 1394.
The soils in the vineyard transition from gravely soils in the upper blocks to silty loam, sand and clay soils in the lower blocks, contributing to the resulting complexity. The own-rooted vines in the original Estate vineyard are now 24 years old.
At the winery the fruit was partially destemmed, with about 1/3 left in whole cluster, and was cold macerated for 3 days. After cold maceration the fermentation vats were warmed and fermented using 80% native yeasts and the remainder cultured yeasts. Manual punch downs were performed over a two-week period three times per day, reducing to twice daily towards the end of fermentation. At the completion of fermentation, the juice was transferred into approximately 30% new French oak barrels, and the remainder in previously used French oak barrels. It underwent full malolactic fermentation and was aged for a period of about 20 months. Prior to bottling in August 2019 the wine was racked and filtered.
The 2017 Estate Pinot Noir displays aromas of bright and dark red fruits along with spice, green peppercorns and earthy, minerally notes reflective of the vineyard’s terroir. These same notes carry through to the palate, which is well-balanced, with a suave texture, and a saline note. On the finish there are bright black fruit and mineral notes, and while the tannins are still prominent, they will mellow with age. Our 2017 Foxtrot Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir can easily be aged for 5 or more years. It can also be consumed with pleasure in the near term, though decanting an hour or more in advance is highly recommended.
